Adrian scoops 2017 Public Advocate's Prize
The Public Advocate, Colleen Pearce, has awarded Geelong artist Adrian Segon the 2017 Public Advocate Art Prize for his painting, 'Adrian's House'.
Adrian’s painting was part of State Trustee’s 2017 CONNECTED art exhibition, held annually at the Atrium, Federation Square, Melbourne.
Now in its 15th year, the annual CONNECTED exhibition features artwork by people with disability or mental illness.
Each year the Public Advocate awards a prize to an artwork which is then presented to an organisation in recognition of its work with Victorians with disability or mental Illness, or who are otherwise vulnerable.
Ms Pearce said Adrian's artwork immediately drew her in.
Where most people use words to communicate, Adrian uses his art.
He draws on his private world producing images that captivate the viewer, and invites the viewer to share in these with him. Patterning, intricate detail and his emotive use of colour produce a vibrancy that gives life to Adrian’s beautiful works.
Ms Pearce said she had seen some of Adrian’s work at the Ubu Gallery, Geelong just the week before the exhibition and was captivated by it.
“I recognised his style immediately I entered the Atrium to choose the prize.
"Each year, I always remark on the increasing high standard of art at CONNECTED and this year is no different. It is really very impressive and such a diversity of artwork," Ms Pearce said.
“I’ve noticed that many artists with disability choose the subject matter of a house to express themselves and I believes this is a very telling choice.
“For many of these Victorians, their residence is not the home it should be and, perhaps, it gives rise to an unrequited yearning for home. Whether or not this applies to the winning artwork today, I cannot say.
“However, the winning artist’s statement does say that his art represents his inner thoughts and outer experiences."
Adrian wins $500 and a framed certificate.
