Why volunteer?

About this page

Volunters willingly give their time, skills, and life experience to help others.

That's a wonderful thing. But there are benefits for the volunteer as well.

Volunteering can have social, emotional and work-related benefits including:

  • satisfaction from giving something back to the community
  • making new friends and staying connected with your local community
  • learning new sklls or consolidating existing skills
  • building communication and interpersonal skills
  • gaining work experience in the area of health and disability services
  • increased self-esteem and confidence

For people who are currently employed, volunteer roles are a great addition to any resume. An individual's willingness to volunteer demonstrates commitment, a sense of social justice, and a greater awareness of their community.

Retired professionals often discover that volunteering is an excellent way to utilise their existing skills, maintain their involvement in the community, and make new friends.

A word from one of our volunteers...

"Being a Community Visitor has intrigued, amazed, saddened, enraged, inspired, amused, frustrated and engaged me. I am constantly learning. This is the best non-paying job I've had."
- Chris, Community Visitor
