COVID-19 and the work of the Office of the Public Advocate
A message from Victoria's Public Advocate, Colleen Pearce
17 March 2020
As most people are aware, the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. The situation is continually evolving and changing. The Office of the Public Advocate is following government advice to implement strategies aimed at slowing down the transmissibility of the virus, to reduce the possibility of a large surge in serious cases impacting the health system.
Measures implemented to date include:
- staff working from home where possible
- cancelation of all non-essential meetings
- rigorous hygiene
- social distancing (1.5 metres between people).
Where possible we will be contacting people by phone and using other technology to undertake our work.
We have also had to cancel our community education events scheduled for March and early April.
We will continue to review when and how we do our work in line with current government advice and awareness of our responsibility to safeguard the health and human rights of some of the most vulnerable in our community.
