Jody Barney wins 2020 Independent Achiever at Aspire Awards

Jody Barney, a deaf Indigenous woman and leading Aboriginal disability cultural trainer and consultant, has been named the 2020 TAC Independent Achiever at this year's Aspire Awards.

The TAC Independent Achiever Award recognises  a person who plays a pivotal role in opening new doors, advocating for greater independence and creating broader community awareness for people living with a disability.

The Public Advocate, Colleen Pearce, nominated Jody in recognition of her impressive achievements in promoting social justice and of breaking through multiple barriers, both across Australia and internationally.

Since 2007 Jody has run her own training and consultancy business – the Deaf Indigenous Community Consultancy.

She has been tireless in pursuing improved recognition and supports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disabilities – and for the broader community.

She was appointed to The First Nations Peoples Strategic Advisory Group – established to guide the Disability Royal Commission.

Jody’s significant contribution includes providing expert advice in the development of the OPA's practice guide, Walk with Me, Talk with Me – a publication that resulted in better internal practices and one that other government agencies have sought to replicate.
