OPA volunteer Robyn Cunningham named Ballarat's Senior of the Year
Congratulations to OPA volunteer Robyn Cunningham who has been named as Ballarat's Senior of the Year for her exceptional contribution to the community.
Robyn, who has been a Community Visitor for 18.5 years, is a Community Visitor and the Regional Convenor for the Mental Health Stream in the Grampians Region.
She also volunteers with the Ballarat Seventh Day Adventist Church
In the past, together with her late husband, Robyn fostered more than 40 children.
As a Community Visitor, Robyn visits many people who are involuntary patients, sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Robyn ensures these people are given a voice, and that any concerns they raise are addressed with staff.
She is very proactive in raising issues and absolutely tenacious in seeking a resolution for patients' concerns.
Last year, Robyn and her team undertook 98 visits to mental health units in the Grampiens Region to observe the environment and staff interaction with residents and patients, make enquiries and inspect documents, communicate with residents and patients to ensure they were being cared for and supported with dignity and respect, and to identify any issues of concern.
In performing her role, Robyn also attends quarterly meetings with the management of Ballarat Health to ensure that the issues that her and her fellow Community Visitors raise are escalated, actioned and taken on board.
