People with disability or mental illness often need extra support during police interviews.

If you are interviewed by police, you need to:

  • understand complex information quickly
  • understand your legal rights
  • be able to communicate with people in positions of authority.

What is an Independent Third Person?

An Independent Third Person supports people with disability or mental illness when they speak with police. They attend interviews with alleged offenders, victims and witnesses.

They help you:

  • understand what is happening
  • understand police questions
  • talk to police.

An Independent Third Person is also called an ITP.

ITPs are volunteers, trained and supported by the Office of the Public Advocate.

They are independent of police and the investigation.
