VCAT appointed guardians and administrators

If a person with disability is not able to make a decision that needs to be made or there are concerns about the decisions they are making, or others are making for them, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) can appoint:

  • an administrator with power to make decisions for the person about specified financial matter(s)
  • a guardian with power to make decisions for the person about specified personal matter(s).

When you have been appointed as a guardian

Where possible, you should support the person to make their own decisions.

When you have been appointed as an administrator

Where possible, you should support the person to make their own decisions.

Your role is to support the person in making their own decisions in accordance with the VCAT order.

Guardianship and administration orders made before 1 March 2020

If you were appointed as a guardian or administrator before 1 March 2020, your role and responsibilities are set out in the Guardianship and Administration Act 1986.
